     JOURNEY

"In 1995 a journey began, one I had prepared for all my life. From Ensenada,
Baja California, home of Carlos Santana, I traveled south, so slowly I wasn't
really traveling, finding amazing musicians to play with everywhere.
Honoring intuition, never leaving till I felt the flow, I had no schedule, no
itinerary. Even sitting still the real journey was underway, traversing new
interior territory. Inside, I crossed lonely deserts, rivers of joy, mountain
ranges of fear, jungles of mystery, not knowing the goal, only trusting.

I played with truly gifted people like Rubén Gonzales and Orlando López
Cachao in of Buena Vista Social Club, visited inspiring places like the islands of
Solentinami in Nicaragua, and performed with street actors in Cartagena, with
a banda in a village high above Pátzcuaro, Michoacan, for a funeral in a
cemetery overlooking Lake Atitlan, a solo concert for the white smocked
Mayans of  Najá in the Lacandon rain forest.

Nearly two years later, in the Amazon Basin of Brasil I felt a quickening.
In Manaus, playing on a live television music show, I was introduced to
Antônio Melo, talented composer and guitarist. As we became acquainted
we both recognized the inspired connection that musicians hope for. And,
on a boat in the middle of the 'river sea', I met Thiago de Mello, true musical
magician and mentor. When Antônio and I decided to record, I invited Thiago
and he accepted without hesitation, creating instruments on the spot from
ordinary household objects.

At the scheduled recording time the power went out for an hour. We waited,
and the power came back. Everyone was ready.

Two afternoons in the studio made it possible for you to hear, to feel...
Listen now!
INSPIRATION

Now available on CD, in North America from Dexofon Records, Inspiration was
included in the Recording Academy Entry List as one of 119 CDs eligible for
Grammy nomination as "Best Contemporary World Album"

     INSPIRATION!"

The music fed our souls, the seed was planted. Nothing to do but wait (again!) Five years
later, in Rio de Janeiro where Antônio now lives, he and Thiago collaborated with
producer Flavio Goulart of Ethos-Brasil Records, adding finishing touches, more
"organic percussion" ranging from berimbau to a vocal surdu, and creating a truly
inspired listening experience...

      HISTORY

January, 2009, I began directing 16 students in the Afropop Ensemble of Naropa University. Great final concert (Way to go people!) The majority of the class performed in the 6th annual Bao Bao Festival at Boulder Theater, providing the backup band for Kofi Mawuko, from Ghana - and they did it just 7 weeks after the first class! I made a repeat performance at  the Jazzoula/Buddy Defranco Festival in Missoula, MT, and performed a set honoring Buddy Defranco, 86 year old clarinet wiz, who is still playing his butt off. In Missoula for the festival were Benny Golson, Dave Samuels, Randy Sandke, Steve Smith. Summer '09 is ripping and rich with musical adventure... Boulder's new Bateria Alegria, EEFC Balkan Music Camp, new blues with Little Joe McLerran, a return to MT for a set with Hughey Lewis& the Big Sky Mudflaps, and more to come!

2008 Started with a wild ski tour - playing outdoors for the X Games in Aspen and warming up for De La Soul. Continuing with Jazzoula Fest in Missoula, MT and total inspiration by Buddy DeFranco, Phil Woods, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Allred.
The BIG SKY MUDFLAPS  reunited in NYC Aug 30, at Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Sq. South, NY, NY to celebrate the life of Richard Wendell Cordtz. What a night! I returned to NYC in December to perform with Thiago de Mello & Amazon (with guest vocalist, Ithamara Koorax) in a celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - world premiere of "A Flame in the Dark", Thiago de Mello's composition honoring Sergio de Mello and all those who died in the bombing of the UN Offices in Bhagdad. The year finished with the long awaited release of Judy Roderick & the Forbears on the Dexofon label. With Mac Rebennack playing piano & B3 on four tunes... there is a lot more than meets the eye... or the ear at first listening!

Summer 2007 musical adventures were a blast: Carbondale Art Fair and Telluride Jazz Fest wi Bola Abimbola, as well as Crestone Music fest with Tobatana Marimba. eighteen years ago I played Telluride Jazz in its infancy - on the same stage! Not to forget a great reunion with the Big Sky Mudflaps, including several illustrious guests: Joan Zen, Huey Lewis and a great violinist from Brooklyn!

In Sept 2006 I performed a wonderful series of concerts in Brazil with Thiago de Mello and Antonio Mello, in Rio de Janeiro, and also in "MIMO" Mostra International de Musica em Olinda  near Recife, Pernambuco. Audiences were great and the crews superb. Lume Arte, the producer of the festival, originates from
a great love of music and manifests an impressive blend of vision and attention to detail. In addition I gave a clinic for some very motivated and naturally talented young reed players... in Portuguese!

I was also invited to
perform as a special guest with Sharon Isbin and Thiago de Mello. I love playing Thiago's music, and Sharon always brings performance to a very high level.

Then in my spare time, I studied with the amazing young "AcariOcamerata" of Acari and sat in with Ney Conceiçao, Marcos Amorim, Fernando Trocados, Eduardo Neves and many others. Saw great musicians everywhere, and a bigger than life show by Ithamara Koorax. As if that was not enough, my friends from new Orleans, Tom McDermott and Evan Christopher were in Rio, and we had a chance to hang out and play with some great Cariocas! I gained a wealth of friendship and the "Inspiration" tour truly lived up to its name.

2005 was an exciting year, recording a new CD of original music with Thiago de Mello in NYC, starting the Dexter Payne Quartet and the opportunity to perform with singer/composer René Marie. Al that plus dates with Lionel Young, Boubacar Diébaté & Dialy Kounda. and Michael Stanwood as well as Playback Theater West, regular Mondays at Herb's with Denver Jazz Orchestra (dir. Sam Bivens)  and frequent engagements with latin jazz Dan Egger-Belandria Trio.

Dexter's sound blends the musical idioms of  all the Americas  with a blues and jazz background. He changed his  life in two and a half years  working with musicians in  Central  and South  America.  In Brasil he met  talented young guitarist/ composer, Antônio Melo, whose credits include "Homenagem a  Radamés  Gnattallí" on Badi Assad  CD Solo (Chesky).

Together  with Thiago de Mello
Dexter and Antonio  recorded the CD "Inspiration" originally released in Brazil by  Ethos-Brasil.  With liner notes by eminent Brazilian critic/producer, Arnaldo DeSouteiro.
"Inspiration"  is also available in the U.S. on Dexofon Records.

He  also recorded  in  Rio de Janeiro  with  Beth Carvalho and  Paulinho Tapajós, and  performed in  la Habana  with patriarch  Elio  Revé   and with   Orlando Lopez Cachao of the famous Buena Vista Social Club. Meeting and playing with Ruben Gonzales and Cachaito was a life altering experience.

On his return from South America, Dexter performed in concert with Thiago de Mello and Amazon (special guest Sharon Isbin) and presented music from "Journey to the Amazon" with Grammy winners  Sharon  Isbin  and Thiago de Mello  in the Hamptons Music Festival and at the  92nd  St Y  in  New York. He recorded in  Woodstock, NY for Artie Traum and returns to NY frequently to perform and record with Thiago de Mello.
